Note - People residing in Quebec are required to have prescription drug insurance coverage. If you are not covered by a private plan (for example, through your employer, professional association, etc.), you are required to register for the public plan.
Most residents are required to pay an annual premium for the plan regardless of whether you fill any prescription medicines. Low-income seniors, children, unmarried full-time students living with their parents and provincial social assistance recipients are exempt from paying premiums.
The premium is collected differently depending on whether you are registered with a private or the public drug plan. In the case of public plan beneficiaries, the premium amount is calculated through your annual income tax return. For private plan beneficiaries, the premium is usually collected through regular payroll deductions throughout the year.
