Is My Prescription Covered?

If you have just received a prescription and are wondering if that treatment is covered, you are in the right place.

The Canadian Skin Patient Alliance developed this interactive drug coverage finder to help you determine if you have coverage for the prescription you have received.

Determining what – if any – drug coverage is available to you and your family is a complex question. It depends on whether you have access to a private insurance plan through work, school, or a union, where in Canada you live, your family income, your age and what condition(s) you have that the prescription would treat.

This tool is designed to be used by patients who have received their prescription from their healthcare provider in the community and plan to fill it at a community pharmacy. Any prescriptions issued and filled while you are a hospital in-patient are covered under medicare and should not involve any cost to you.

This interactive tool is intended to help you find the answers by answering a series of questions. These questions are asked in a specific order that reflects how the many public and private drug plans work together. What to expect with this tool

Because of how all these plans are designed, this tool asks you questions in a specific order.

First, you will be asked about whether you have coverage through the federal government – either as an employee, like a federal public servant or member of the military, or as a person for whom the federal government has a special responsibility, like First Nations and Inuit peoples or refugees. If this doesn’t apply to you, please click no at the bottom.

Second, you will next be asked to choose the province where you reside (live). Each province has its own set of public drug plans, and this tool will ask you specific questions to figure out if you are eligible to be covered by one of them. If you are covered by a public drug plan, this tool will take you to the public drug plan website where you can search the specific drug you are interested in to see if it is covered.

Third, if you’re not eligible for a public drug plan in the province you reside, this tool will help you figure out if you could be covered by a private plan. Many private plans are available to you in different circumstances, and this will help you figure out if you could access coverage through one of them. Sometimes drug manufacturers also have special programs for patients to access a new drug.
