Are you a non-Indigenous or Métis resident who has a disease or condition that requires treatment outside of a hospital and who does not have access to drug coverage from another source?

Yes

If yes, you must be registered with the Extended Health Benefits for Specified Diseases to have coverage through this plan. If you have already registered, and you are receiving care from a primary care provider for one of the listed eligible diseases then you are likely eligible for full public coverage of medications to treat your condition that are provided under the program. The program is administered by Alberta Blue Cross on behalf of the territorial government. It adjudicates medication benefits on the basis of the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Drug Benefit List developed by Indigenous Services Canada for its client population.

If a medication has been prescribed for you is but not on the benefit list, your prescriber or pharmacist may submit a request to Alberta Blue Cross on your behalf for prior authorization.

If no, then your treating prescriber must register you for coverage. The application can be found at this link.
